Our Master Bedroom Makeover
Last summer I showed you our summer bedroom just before we were going to start a little mini-makeover. Well, it’s now almost a year later and it’s still not done. {whoops!} That being said, we have made quite a few changes throughout the past few months, and I’m excited to show you what we’ve done so far. I’m hoping that everything will be totally finished up within the next couple of months, so I’ll do a final post at that time with all of the specifics. For today, I wanted to share some easy ways to update your bedroom for summer.
How to Update Your Bedroom for Summer
Our bedrooms often tend to be one of those rooms that get a little neglected. Everyone needs a little retreat of their own though, so I encourage you to spend a little time updating your bedroom for summer. A little decluttering and a few seasonal touches can totally transform it into your own summer paradise!
I’ve put together 7 of my favorite tips for how to update your bedroom for summer. They’re easy to do, don’t take long to do, and you can enjoy them all summer long! Ready to get started? Let’s go!
Tip#1: Change up the bedding.
I always start with cleaning our mattress and switching up the bedding for any seasonal bedroom update. Not only does it make a big impact in terms of the look of the space, but it also makes a a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. There’s nothing worse than hot and stuffy bedding in the summer months! Replace your sheets with a light-weight cotton blend or linen sheet to keep you fresh and cool through the summer months. Personally, I ditch the top sheet and just use a fitted sheet to keep things simpler.
I prefer to stick with a fairly neutral tone {usually white!} for our main bedding and then add color with throw pillows and/or a layered quilt or blanket. This allows me to switch up the accent colors and designs more regularly without investing a lot of money or requiring lots of storage. If you’re more of a color person though, choose your favorite summer color or floral design to spruce things up. The trick is to find something that makes you happy!
We use the same duvet cover and shams year round and switch out the insert in the summer for the lightest, summer-weight duvet. I also keep the textured blanket at the end of the bed as I can add it to the duvet on cooler nights or sleep with it on its own without the duvet on those really hot nights.
Tip#2: Declutter.
One of the easiest {and free!} ways to update your bedroom is to declutter those items that you no longer love, use, or need. Summer is the perfect time to lighten things up, so go through your items and try to clear away a little space. Remove extra decor or furniture pieces that are just cluttering up the space until you’re left with just your favorite items.
It’s amazing how much fresher your room will feel without all of the clutter!
Tip #3: Add some art work.
Artwork is a great way to showcase your personality and add some character to your room. It also works as the perfect starting off point for choosing what accent colors you want to use. I loved this abstract art from Lindsay Letters and loved the mix of blues, greens, and blush pink.
While I typically go with blues for my accent color, this time I decided to pull from the pink, and added the blush linen heart pillow to the bed. I don’t get to use a lot of pink around the house, so it’s a nice change! I love how oversized and cozy it is too!
Tip #4: Create a pretty summer vignette.
Since I don’t have a lot of display space in our bedroom and like to keep things fairly minimal, I try to use a combination of decorative and functional items in my vignettes. This white diffuser, for example, is a pretty display piece as well as providing ambiance lightening and functioning as a diffuser. Favorite books on display add height to your display while reminding you to stick with your summer reading list. Choose items that you love and use.
Another way to tie a display together is to use some kind of tray to corral everything together. This provides a more cohesive and less cluttered look. Fresh flowers or greenery always add a beautiful touch to any space, but faux stems work too if you don’t want the fuss of caring for real plants.
Tip #5: Add a summer scent.
I love a good summer scent! Add a summer candle or some citrus essential oils to your diffuser to make your bedroom smell amazing. I keep a diffuser beside my bed and add some oils when I first wake up or as I’m getting ready for bed. You can also make your own DIY room and linen spray to help freshen things up or provide a nice, light scent before bed.
Tip #6: Light it up.
I love all of the natural daylight that comes in during the summer months! Make sure you give your windows a good cleaning so you can see out into that beautiful sunshine. Mirrors are a great way to bring in to reflect light if you don’t have a lot of natural light in your space.
If you’re thinking about night time lighting, a new light fixture can totally change up the look and function of your room! We previously had table lamps on our bedside tables but they didn’t really provide the best light for reading and took up the majority of space on the night stand. We recently added these wall lights on either side of the bed, and I love them! They provide the perfect bedside light and tie in with the black on the mirror and curtain rods. We have them hardwired, but they can be used as a plug-in light as well.
Tip #7: Relax!!
Now that you’ve created a pretty bedroom retreat, make sure you take some time to relax and enjoy! Those laid back summer days will be gone before you know it. Grab your favorite summer drink, tackle your summer reading list, pamper yourself, or just enjoy some time alone!
